Lui Tiow Kar Scholarship

In 2018, the Volleyball Association of Singapore (VAS) set up the VAS-Lui Tiow Kar Volleyball Scholarship. The idea of this scholarship was first mooted in 2016 after the passing of the late Mr Lui Tiow Kar and is fully supported by both VAS and Mrs Lui Tiow Kar.

Achievements

The VAS VISION2020 recognises the value of every fraction of the Volleyball Fraternity in advancing the priorities and the development of the sport. It is important to not only increase the number of players through awareness and education, but also to increase the level of basic skill sets taught to the players. VISION2020 is all about changing mental paradigms and creating strategies to better the potential of Volleyball.

Scholarship Details

This scholarship is the first of such in Singapore Volleyball. The driving force behind the Scholarship is the desire to motivate promising young Volleyball athletes to continue the persue of their volleyball dreams, and to support them financially in their pursuits.

The Scholarship aims to:
Motivate deserving sports talents to achieve their sporting goals; and
Support high-performing volleyball athletes to pursue excellence in volleyball.

Tenure, Categories & Quanta of Awards

The tenure of the scholarship is one year. The scholarship has 2 categories. The cash award for each category of scholarship is as follows:

Secondary/Junior College/Technical Institute Category

The applicant:

  • is a Singapore citizen;
  • has shown outstanding performance from January 2019 to December 2019 in either age-group, inter-school/ national, and/or national sports association-recognised competition/s
  • must be of good character & conduct;
  • must have his/her application endorsed by his/her school** or the Volleyball Association of Singapore; and
  • agrees to be profiled in materials produced/approved by the Volleyball Association of Singapore and to allow the use of his/her photos/images in these materials.
  • ** Applicants waiting for school postings can get their alma maters to endorse their applications.

Polytechnic and University Category

The applicant:

  • is a Singapore citizen;
  • is under 25 years old as of 31 December 2019;
  • has shown commendable performance from January 2019 to December 2019 in regional or international sporting
    competition/s recognised by the Volleyball Association of Singapore;
  • is not a recipient of the SpexScholarship;
  • must have his application endorsed by the relevant National Sports Association; and
  • agrees to be profiled in materials produced/approved by the Volleyball Association of Singapore and to
    allow the use of his/her photos/images in these materials.
